There are very few necessary elements needed to sustain life; air, water, food, shelter and clothing (climate depending). Food being one of the necessary elements, has becoming increasingly complicated in order to support the billion of people on this earth. Globalization is a complex process of both mass global change and local differentiation. In dietary terms, this can be verbalized as a dietary convergence or dietary adaptation.
While Subway recently surpassed McDonald's as the leading brand-name fast food. However McDonald's will always be known for systematically changing food production and consumption. At the time fast food was known for saving time and money for an occasional sweet indulgence. Today fast food is often considered a diet, not a moderated treat. In addition to increased consumption there has been an increase in demand. More demand means more fast food; and more fast food means more consequences. The consequences effecting health, the economy, culture and the environment will all be examined.
- Convergence - an increased reliance on simple grains, increased consumption of meat and meat products, dairy products, edible oil, salt and sugar, and a lower intake of dietary fiber.
- Adaption - an increased consumption of brand-name processed and store-bought food, an increased number of meals eaten outside the home and consumer behaviors driven by the appeal of new foods available.
