Obesity
- Once considered only an issue for developed countries, obesity has now become a global epidemic. It has even been coined, "globesity"
- According to the World Health Organization, WHO, obesity is a result of an increased intake of energy-dense foods that are high in fat, salt and sugars but low in vitamins, minerals and other micro-nutrients; and a decrease in physical activity due to the increasingly sedentary nature of many forms of work, changing modes of transportation, and increasing urbanization.
- Since 1980, the number of obese individuals has more than doubled.
- 65% of the world's population live in countries where overweight or obesity health issues kill more people than underweight issues.
- An estimated 500 million adults worldwide are obese and 1.5 billion are overweight or obese. And if recent trends continue unabated, nearly 60 percent of the world’s population (3.3 billion people) could be overweight (2.2 billion) or obese (1.1 billion) by 2030.
